We have a history...

For the Hartman family, which includes the Hartman business, it is important that we put the Lord God first in all things. We also believe in applying biblical principles in what we say and in our actions. As a family owned company, we try to maintain that sense of family and recognize that our employees have lives outside the walls of the company and we endeavor to support them. We are sensitive to the challenges that life brings and understand the dynamics of balancing family life – whether that family is one or many. We believe that this makes us a truly unique employer.

We are also motivated by excellence. This concept is the basis for our mission statement:
Since 1948 we have engaged in the personal approach with our construction, industrial, and manufacturing customers. We strive to excel at providing optimal fastening and packaging solutions through strategic partnerships with our suppliers and customers.

We are striving for nothing less than excellence in all things.
– Philippians 3:13 & 14

The Beginning of Hartman

Hartman’s story begins in 1948 when Robert Hartman began selling stapling equipment from his garage in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

What began out of necessity soon fueled an entrepreneurial spirit and a much larger enterprise was established

Two Short Years Later

The Robert L. Hartman Company eventually grew large enough to move to a building located on Preble Avenue in the North Side of Pittsburgh. Another period of growth landed Hartman on Samsonia Street, now home to the Mattress Factory art museum.

While the main product line at Hartman was the tools and staples used in industrial packaging, Bob also sold bulk nails to the construction industry. The post WWII construction boom opened the doors to further product expansion with the company selling the tools used for construction as well as the fasteners.

Continued Expansion

In 1960, the company expanded again and moved to Madison Avenue where it remained until the move to 93 Mayview Road, Hartman’s current location.

New Leadership

1983 brought about another change when Allen Hartman became president and took ownership of the company. Under Allen’s leadership, relationships with key manufacturers were developed and strengthened. In 2016, the leadership of the company was passed to the third generation, Andrew Hartman.
